In the past three weeks, I spent a lot of time interviewing technology investors in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, New York, and London. We discussed a lot of topics, but in more than 20 one-hour conversations, one topic reappeared. This is augmented reality.
Investors’ interest in augmented reality is rising and they want to know everything about the technology and its market. From these conversations, I have solidified two basic views on augmenting reality. First of all, the development of augmented reality will not be fast or easy, but augmented reality will greatly affect the way we interact with technology. Second, there are many challenges in the process of bringing augmented reality to market. The first is about IT procurement personnel, followed by about ordinary users. This will drive a new round of technological innovation and bring a lot of new value in the technology industry.
New challenges, new opportunities
One big reason I like augmented reality is that I have tried early augmented reality devices and these devices are amazing. More importantly, after trying out these devices, your feeling is that these devices are not just for demonstrations. Augmented reality will bring great opportunities in the real world. I have discussed the application of augmented reality in key vertical industries, but at present augmented reality gives the impression that this will affect everything and everyone.
However, it is not easy to grasp these opportunities. If you want to see significant improvements in all aspects of the virtual reality experience, you will also need to develop new hardware components, new interactive models, next-generation applications, and interconnected services that we don’t currently understand.
Let us first look at the hardware. Microsoft's breakthrough HoloLens is currently available in a developer version for $3,000. HoloLens integrates a variety of sensors, cameras, speakers, and 3 main processors, including the CPU, GPU (graphics processing unit) and HPU (holographic processing unit). Microsoft independently designed a 32-bit, X86-based HPU because the company found that traditional CPU/GPU architectures cannot provide adequate processing power to handle large amounts of data input and visual information output.
In the process of promoting augmented reality, Microsoft is not the only company that invests in chip design. Many large and small companies are focusing on this area, trying to study how to develop a new generation of chips to drive innovative experiences.
Another area that attracts industry interest is cameras, sensors, and microphones in augmented reality devices. These devices can capture the user's location, the people and objects around the user, and what kind of information their hands, eyes, and voice are sending.
One of the necessary technologies for augmented reality is the successful capture of user input without the use of a keyboard, mouse, or even a touch screen. Companies such as Microsoft, Meta, Leap Motion, and Ultrahaptics are all developing this area, using cameras and software to capture the subtle movements of the palms and fingers. In the future, you will be able to use your hands to manipulate data and digital objects. In addition, some companies are further developing intelligent assistants to provide more powerful voice interactive features.
Display technology is also very important. One fundamental difference between virtual reality and augmented reality is that virtual reality can take advantage of the current high-definition screens for smartphones. This is because when using virtual reality, you only need to look at the screen. But for augmented reality, you also need to be able to see the outside world.
There are challenges in developing such a screen, and this will also become a key factor that restricts the development of augmented reality technology. This is also a point that Microsoft HoloLens has criticized. Due to cost, complexity, and battery life, HoloLens currently has a small screen area for displaying augmented reality content. Meta's new Meta 2 provides a larger viewing area, but it must be connected to a PC before it can be used. Magic Leap, the darling of the augmented reality industry, received $1.4 billion in investment. The company hinted that its display technology will be different from the current types of display screens.
Of course, these powerful hardware cannot be used without software. Excellent augmented reality software needs to be able to collect and process a variety of different input data at the same time and adjust the experience based on new information. Such software needs to connect to back-end services over a high-speed network. This may mean that the future of augmented reality devices will become the world's most powerful Internet of Things terminal.
Just started, but the outlook is promising
These circumstances made me excited. This is due to the fact that despite the enormous challenges of augmented reality, it also means that the tech industry sees a wealth of opportunities in the areas where it is best. It is necessary to develop the next generation of smart phones, tablets and notebooks, but this cannot ignite our imagination. What's really exciting about Augmented Reality is that once you've experienced it, you'll discover that this technology is really important.
Therefore, we will see more and more large-scale companies investing in augmented reality technology. In addition, more small companies will seek breakthroughs in one or two areas and hope to become a more critical part of the industry.
At present, augmented reality is still in its infancy and it cannot be guessed which company will succeed. But I want to make the following prediction: This will be a field that can change the world. With the development of this technology, the pattern of the technology industry will also change.
VR is already on fire this year. The word AR has also gradually attracted everyone's attention. Both VR and AR are technologies that can change the world. Augmented reality will not be fast or easy, but augmented reality will greatly affect us. The way to interact with technology.
