Recently, Intel plans to introduce a new PSM4 silicon photonics product that can transmit data at a rate of 100G per second over a distance of two kilometers.

There are many factors and trends in the industry, such as cloud computing, big data is driving the implementation of Parallel Single Mode Quad (PSM4) and Silicon Photonics (SiPH) in next-generation data center designs and architectures. PSM4 and silicon photonics fill the gap between 25G multimode options and long range (LR) fiber optic solutions in data center interconnection options. By simply plugging into the structured cabling, it is easy to implement using the pigtail version. According to the industry, PSM4 is a solution that can adapt to current and next-generation bandwidth upgrades.

At present, the development of the semiconductor industry is still following the "Moore's Law," but in recent years, there has been a trend of slowdown, and this law may also end in 2021. In order to ensure that the semiconductor manufacturing industry can continue to maintain a rapid pace of change, many researchers are constantly looking for new solutions, such as increasing transistor density, looking for new materials to replace silicon. Among the successors of silicon, graphene was placed in an important position. Ren Zhengfei also publicly stated that graphene will overturn the silicon era. However, graphene is still unable to produce in volume, and the manufacturing cost has remained high.

According to professional analysis, the emergence of PSM4 at this time may allow the chip industry to continue to keep track of "Moore's Law." This technology can greatly improve the current data center data exchange bottlenecks. The PSM4 incorporates silicon electronics and optical technology to enable near-laser speed data transmission on a stand-alone silicon chip. Most importantly, the PSM4's production costs and production difficulties are relatively low.

Diane Bryant, executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s data center division, said: “Intel has been developing silicon photonics technology for more than 16 years. We are the first company to use light to light silicon chips.”

High-speed data transmission in the market is based on optical fiber technology, but the production of optical fiber is more complex and costs more than silicon-based products. Microsoft is one of the earliest companies to introduce silicon photonics technology and has used related products in the Azure data center.

Recently, Intel CEO Ke Zaiqi said at the IDF developer conference that Intel’s strategy is to transform from a PC company to a company that drives cloud computing and hundreds of millions of smart, connected computing devices. The PSM4 silicon photonics product is one of the important products that drive cloud computing and big data in the future.
