Recently, Grofund, the world's second largest wafer foundry, announced that its US fab will be laid off because of delays in related orders. However, Grofund did not specify which manufacturer was delaying the order.

According to foreign media reports, due to delays in related orders by some customers, the company's business volume has shrunk. Therefore, Grofund had to carry out related layoffs at this point in time. However, Grofund did not announce how many employees would be cut, nor did he disclose specific rules for layoffs.

The news is that Grofund will have its own three major fabs in the US (also in fabs in Germany and Singapore), including the only Fab 8 crystal in New York State that produces 14nm process. The round factory will lay off employees, and the layoffs will be achieved through early retirement.

It is reported that Grohfang was split from AMD and acquired Chartered Semiconductor and IBM Microelectronics. It is the second largest wafer foundry in the world, and its market share is second only to TSMC. Currently, there are three production bases in Germany, the United States and Singapore, with a total of 10 wafer fabrication plants. The first fab is located in Dresden, Germany, with 2-7 fabs in Singapore and 8-10 fabs in the northeastern United States.

In addition, R&D centers have been established in Beijing and Shanghai, China. Not long ago, Grofund also established a 12-inch wafer manufacturing base in Chengdu, China, with a total investment of over $10 billion. Although Groffontein invested heavily in China, its days are not so moist.

At present, Grofund is the main foundry of AMD, including the recent RMD processor and Polaris graphics chip from AMD. For many years, AMD has always been loyal to Groffont, but Groffont seems to be less eager to compete, and his process is always out of order.

In September 2016, AMD and Grofund re-signed a five-year WSA wafer supply agreement, although it confirmed that AMD will continue to cooperate with Groffont at 14 nm, or even the next 7 nm. However, AMD has also explicitly reserved the option of cooperation with other fabs. So, at that time, AMD decided to include Samsung in the foundry.

In terms of financial reports, Groffont is also stretched in recent years. In 2014, Grofund's advanced process investment partially lost $1.5 billion, and it is reported that it lost $900 million in 2013.

As of June 30, 2016, Grofund's total assets were 20.3 billion US dollars, total liabilities were 4.3 billion US dollars, and the equity-liability ratio was about 27%. Therefore, it was once reported that Groffont will be acquired by Chinese capital.

In September 2016, the majority shareholder of Grofund, Abu Dhabi Advanced Technology Investment Corporation (ATIC) (Mubadala Development Corporation) announced that its semiconductor technology business segment (mainly Grofund) had a net loss of US$1.35 billion, a net loss increased to 67% from the same period in 2015, and exceeded the full year 2015 net loss of US$1.3 billion.
