On December 7, 2007, Strategy Analytics' latest research, "Automotive LED Market Demand: External Lighting Brings Significant Growth Opportunities," predicts the use of LEDs in automotive LCD backlighting and external lighting (currently the latest for fully LED-based applications) The headlights will be expanded. Major LED vendors, including Nichia, Osram, and Lumileds, are currently working with auto partners to grab a large market share (by $1 billion in 2014).

Automotive lighting and driver information applications will deliver the highest growth rates due to the use of higher-priced, high-brightness LEDs in external lighting components and LCD display backlighting.

Internal LED applications will continue to form the bulk of automotive LED demand. The regulatory barriers that limit the use of LEDs on headlamps are being broken, and more LEDs will be available for automotive far and near lights. Strategy Analytics believes that early execution will be cost-constrained and that LED exterior lighting applications will take two years beyond the traditional lighting market. Cost issues directly related to LED device manufacturing and additional application cost issues such as heat sink components and electronic controls remain, which will hinder the development of high-brightness LEDs in low-margin automotive segments.
