At a seminar set up by "FPD International 2009", LG Display of South Korea gave a speech on "The Direction of Technology Development of LCD TVs Overcoming LCD TVs" (October 28, 2009), introducing large-size OLED panels. Development trends and future product plans. On stage, Won Kim, vice president of OLED sales and marketing for LG Display. South Korea's LG Electronics will use the panel developed by LG Display to launch a 15-inch OLED TV at the end of 2009.
In terms of performance parameters of the 15-inch product, the number of pixels is 1366 768 and the resolution is 105 ppi. The total white luminance was 200 cd/m2, the peak luminance was 450 cd/m2, and the black luminance was 0.01 cd/m2. The driving element uses a low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFT which is crystallized by a high-temperature process based on "SPC (Solid Phase Crystallization)". The component structure is a bottom emission type. These performance parameters were announced at the "IMID 2009" held in South Korea in October 2009.
Kim also talked about future product plans. It is planned to release more than 20 inches to the market in 2010, 30 inches or more in 2011, and 40 inches or more in 2012. He said: "By 2012, although the price of 40-inch products will be quite high, it can still be afforded."
2016 cost advantage over liquid crystal
For technical issues facing the stable and low-cost introduction of large-size OLED panels to the market, Kim mentioned (1) driving elements (TFT), (2) OLED materials and their film forming processes, and (3) packaging processes.
(1) In terms of driving components, Kim said that it is likely to use SPC-based low-temperature polycrystalline silicon or an oxide semiconductor based on IGZO (In-Ga-Zn-O). However, TFTs using these two materials need to overcome the problems of large size. In the case of SPC-based low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFTs, "there is currently a way to support the size of the 6th generation glass substrate. However, to achieve a large size of about 40 inches, it is necessary to support the 8th generation glass substrate. An SPC treatment apparatus that performs heat treatment at 700 ° C or higher". Oxide semiconductors are one of the candidates for achieving large size. However, "the current unevenness between batches is still large, so the reproducibility is poor."
(2) In terms of OLED materials, Kim said: "It is planned to replace it with fluorescent materials before 2011, and then replace it with phosphorescent materials. At the same time, it will start from the mask evaporation technology and promote the research of printing technology." As for (3) packaging, "it is best to use solid packaging when considering TV usage." Through these efforts, compared with the LCD panel, “it will strive to achieve a material cost of 150% in 2012 and a yield of 70%. In 2016, the material cost will reach 70-80%, and the yield will reach the same levelâ€.
In addition, LG Display also exhibited 15-inch products in the exhibition area of FPD International 2009. Although it has been publicly displayed at domestic exhibitions in Korea, it is the first time in Japan to exhibit.
