Abstract: This application note introduces the features of Maxim ’s new PMU and DCL products and uses its features to meet specific PMU applications with output currents below 2mA or in the range of 2mA to 50mA.

Overview In traditional semiconductor automated testing, DCL and PMU are alternately connected to the device under test (DUT) through "select relays".

This application note details the unique features of Maxim DCL (MAX9961 / 62, MAX9967 / 68) and PMU (MAX9949 / 50, MAX9951 / 52), enabling users to save the cost of mechanical relays and board space. The second benefit is the ability to use the DCL drive circuit to improve the drive capability of traditional low-current PMUs.

Device Description The MAX9961 / 62/67/68 are dual-channel, low-power, high-speed pin electronic DCL ICs used in automatic test equipment (ATE). Each channel includes a 500Mbps driver, a window comparator, dynamic clamping circuit, and active load (MAX9961 / 62 = 2mA, maximum; MAX9967 / 68 = 35mA, maximum).

MAX9949 / 50 is a dual-channel PMU, used for ATE and other instruments. The small size, wide loading / measurement range, and high-precision specifications make the MAX9949-50 ideal for applications that require one PMU per pin or test point. The MAX9949 / 50 has a built-in buffer drive function, which can expand the PMU voltage and current ranges according to user requirements.

Application Examples The internal loading / sensing and low leakage functions of the MAX9961 / 62/67/68 and the external buffer support function of the MAX9949 / 50 enable these chips to work together and eliminate external relays.

Circuit description requires PMU with Iout <2mA. In this mode, the PMU uses its internal range selection switch to load and measure. The device is in low-leakage mode, and the PMU is connected to the DUT through the loading pin of DCL (Figure 1).

PMU that requires 2mA <Iout <50mA is used in this mode, the PMU uses its external range selection function to load and measure. The reference input of the driver is connected to the Rcom output of the PMU. The PMU's current sense amplifier is used to measure the voltage across the DCL load / sense pin. This voltage pair is used to output the DUT current through the 45Ω driver output (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Conclusion Maxim's DCL and PMU cooperate with analog switches, which can save the mechanical potentiometer, thereby reducing costs and saving board space. When using a small current PMU in the design, DCL can be used to improve the current drive capability.
