Vision-based security systems are almost everywhere in automotive applications. A variety of high-definition displays are quietly appearing in the center console, rear seat back, and dashboard to fully meet the infotainment needs. In addition, automakers are increasingly deploying cameras to improve safety and enable driver-assisted applications (such as improved visibility of reversing and parking). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed new automotive safety regulations that require rear-end video cameras and displays to be standard on all cars in 2014. Reversing accidents cause hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year. The regulation aims to reduce the number of casualties. This will undoubtedly improve safety and enhance the driving experience, but the addition of all these cameras will also bring new challenges to automotive system designers.

High-speed data to ensure traffic safety (I)

A link-specific high-speed video link that transmits high-speed video connects each display or camera in the car to a control (head-end) unit. The easiest is to use a single coaxial cable to display the NTSC (CVBS) signal from the rear camera on the center console's screen. However, the current trend is clearly to use megapixel digital cameras to improve the picture clarity and quality displayed on high-resolution LCD panels.

The high-speed serial digital link connects the video components to provide a seamless connection between the camera's digital imager and the digital LCD display.
