Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has announced a complete design solution for high-brightness (HB) LED intelligent lighting systems that delivers unprecedented ease of use and performance. Product development based on Cypress's new EZ-Color series of HBLED controllers can be supported by the industry's first embedded visual design tool, PSoCExpress software. Engineers only need to enter the selected LEDs and choose the color, the unique EZ-Color architecture and PSoCExpress software combination can provide a complete design solution, which is unprecedented. These design solutions can be applied to a wide range of growing applications such as architectural lighting, general signage, rechargeable flashlights, entertainment lighting, automotive emergency lighting and more.
In order to provide consistent color, current LED designs require a series of complex calculations. At present, HBLED engineers face two biggest problems. One is to consider the difference in LED performance specifications of different manufacturing bins; the other is to reduce the performance of LEDs at different temperatures (such as light output, wavelength, etc.). With PSoCExpress, designers only need to choose colors from the color gamut of the screen. Pre-installed production code specifications and temperature feedback algorithms are automatically applied to the selected design and programmed into the EZ-Color controller. For complex designs, this can save weeks or even months of design time.

The EZ-Color controller not only has the advantage of being easy to design, but also supports up to 16 LED channels. In comparison, competing products can only support four to five channels. Supporting more channels means saving dozens or even hundreds of controllers in very large designs, reducing design complexity, power consumption, and board space. The EZ-Color controller also features Cypress's patent-pending PrISM (High-Precision Illumination Signal Modulation) technology. PrISM modulation technology greatly reduces low frequency flicker and radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI), a common problem in HBLED design. Designers also have the flexibility to add more features to the EZ-Color controller, such as battery charging, motor control, and more.

The CY3261A-RGB evaluation kit supports the EZ-Color family. This evaluation kit demonstrates the flexibility and ease of use of EZ-Color for high-brightness LED color mixing applications and uses temperature compensation to provide consistent color. An interactive graphical interface is also included in the evaluation kit for quick color mixing via CIE charts or direct control of individual HBLEDs.
The EZ-Color series includes devices that can drive up to four (CY8CLED04), eight (CY8CLED08) and 16 (CY8CLED16) LEDs. All devices are available today, and the price of CY8CLED04 in large quantities is less than $4.00.
