Drones are fun, but it’s not fun if their rotors meet people. To help owners avoid injury, prosecution, or high maintenance costs for other artificial adults, researchers have developed anti-collision systems that allow drones to automatically avoid people or obstacles. But existing camera-based anti-collision solutions consume a lot of power and slow down when they avoid obstacles. The anti-collision system developed by Arbe Robotics uses radar to direct the drone to fly, and does not slow down the flight speed, solving the problems of the camera-based anti-collision system.

The Arbe Robotics system includes hardware that detects obstacles within 200 meters in all directions and software that directs the drone to automatically avoid obstacles. If an obstacle larger than 1 meter is scanned, the radar system will automatically guide the drone to avoid obstacles and avoid collision. According to Arbe Robotics, the system consumes 5% of the battery capacity during the entire flight.

The Arbe Robotics anti-collision system is a civilian solution for moving obstacles at low speeds. DARPA (United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) has been researching anti-collision systems that can avoid high-speed moving obstacles, including small aircraft and other drones. Since the current size is comparable to a shoebox, the DARPA system will not be used in small commercial drones in the short term. It is unclear how long the Arbe Robotics solution will go on sale. Until then, collisions between drones and other obstacles are still inevitable.
