Since 2008, with the promotion of Chinese and foreign TV companies such as Samsung and Hisense, LED-backlit LCD TVs have begun to enter people's attention. LED has gradually won the recognition of consumers by virtue of its excellent image quality, energy saving and environmental protection. According to market research firm Display Search, global LED-backlit LCD TVs sold about 4.24 million units in 2009, accounting for only 3% of the entire LCD TV market, but sales will soar to 156 million units in 2014, accounting for the entire LCD TV. The market share will also soar to 64%. Backlight has become one of the mainstream applications in the development of the LED industry. In recent years, China's Taiwan LED manufacturer Jingyuan Optoelectronics has successfully entered this market through technology research and development and strategic alliance. At the 4th China International Lighting & New Energy Lighting Exhibition and Forum (Green Lighting China Forum 2010), China Semiconductor Lighting Network had the opportunity to interview Zhou Mingjun, the general manager of Jingyuan Optoelectronics Co., Ltd., to discuss the market. Development trends and operational experience. China Semiconductor Lighting Network: Since last year, the LED backlight TV market has expanded rapidly. What is the market size of LED-backlit TV in 2010? What is the market penetration rate? Will the future become the mainstream product in the market?
Zhou Mingjun: From the current sales plans and product strategies of TV manufacturers, LED backlight TV has become the mainstream of the future development of the TV market. The new TV products developed by TV manufacturers are mostly LED backlights, and even developing 3D TVs. LEDs are used as backlights. Although the market research estimates vary from market research institutes, the generally consistent estimate should be that the market penetration of LED backlights will be between 10% and 20% in 2010, from the operating conditions of the market this year. Look, it is more likely to approach or reach 20%, and the overall market sales may exceed 30 million units. Of course, there are certain variables in this, such as the shortage of some raw materials such as LED chips and light guide plates, but it will not affect the development of the overall market.
China Semiconductor Lighting Network: Since the LED backlight TV market is expanding rapidly, how much market opportunity do you think it will bring to the LED industry?
Zhou Mingjun: I believe that as long as the market's development trend is determined, its growth rate will be very fast, which can be confirmed by the application of LEDs in notebook backlights. Therefore, it is expected that the LED backlight market for LCD TVs will be the main driving force for the growth of the LED industry in the next three years. From the perspective of Epistar, the current market (for TV and display backlighting) has accounted for 35% to 40% of the total output value. Of course, whether this industry can develop smoothly depends on the entire industry chain, from chip to package, from light bar to module, whether it can be coordinated and promoted together.
China Semiconductor Lighting Network: What impact will the LED backlight TV market have on the LED industry?
Zhou Mingjun: Due to the rise of LED backlight TV market, Samsung, LG, AUO, BOE and other companies will inevitably increase the vertical integration of LED. For example, Samsung established Samsung LED, LG established LG Innotek, AUO has Ronda, and Chi Mei has Qi Li. This will be an important trend in the future LED industry landscape.
In addition, independent LED suppliers like Epistar will generally adopt a strategic alliance to deal with them. For example, Jingyuan Optoelectronics only implements epitaxy and chips, and does not package, it must form a strategic alliance with packaging plants and application plants. In the mainland, Jingyuan Optoelectronics also maintains good relations with companies such as Konka and Skyworth.
China Semiconductor Lighting Network: Since it talks about the relationship with mainland enterprises, what industrial layout does Jingyuan Optoelectronics carry out in the mainland?
Zhou Mingjun: Epistar believes that TV backlighting and lighting are the two most important markets in the future. In order to cope with the development of these two markets, the wafer is also actively deployed in the mainland. Jingyuan Optoelectronics previously had a factory in Xiamen and Dalian, mainly for chips, and there was no production of epitaxial wafers. Recently, Jingyuan Optoelectronics invested in Changzhou to build a factory that can produce epitaxy and chips. It is expected to start mass production in the first half of next year. The factory was built by means of strategic alliances and joint investment with mainland TV manufacturers. In the future, the crystal unit also hopes to build more new production bases in other regions in this way.
Although Jingyuan Optoelectronics focuses on the development of the backlight market, there is a problem that needs attention, that is, LED backlight can only be regarded as a driving force to promote the growth of the LED industry in the short to medium term. We believe that the backlight market will have huge room for growth before 2012, but the growth momentum of the LED market after 2012 will mainly come from lighting. Because LED backlights have reached more than 90% penetration rate in notebook computers, the penetration rate of TVs will reach 70% to 80% after three years. The market will reach saturation and the driving force for growth will be reduced. Companies must deploy new market applications in advance. Therefore, Epistar not only focuses on backlighting, but also invests considerable power in the lighting market. The current output value of the lighting market reaches 20%. The layout of the wafer is mainly based on backlight production at this stage, but there is also a large amount of research and development investment in lighting, and at the same time cooperate with lighting manufacturers to work on various lighting projects.
China Semiconductor Lighting Network: In the upstream of LED, patents have always been a sensitive issue. At present, mainland and Taiwanese companies are suffering from different key patents in the hands of foreign big companies. Jingyuan Optoelectronics has a more successful experience in solving patent problems. What suggestions do you have for the problems encountered by Chinese LED companies in patents?
Zhou Mingjun: European and American companies have started very early on LEDs, so they have a complete layout on the basic patents of LEDs. But there are also several opportunities. First, in the next few years, some basic patents will expire. Second, LED companies still have to develop their own patented technology, or to avoid design. Third, it is to cooperate with schools and research institutes to jointly develop some basic patents, which is also very helpful in solving patent closures.
