The Power Stage DesignerTM tool helps design the most common switch mode power supply stages. It also helps to deepen the understanding of the voltage and current in the converter.
Instructions
- Select the topology that suits your needs on the main screen or in the Topology menu.
- Fill in your values ​​and requirements in Design Values. When you mouse over each input field, a comment with a hint is displayed on some fields.
- Note: If the field turns red, you will need to reconsider the input and results.
- Check the “Recommended Value†to get the recommended values ​​for the inductor and/or transformer. The calculated output filter inductance is to achieve the current ripple required at all input voltages. The displayed turns ratio is the maximum possible value to achieve the desired maximum duty cycle. Select a turns ratio equal to or less than the calculated value so that the turns ratio does not exceed the maximum. The transformer inductance shown is calculated to achieve the required magnetic current at the average input voltage.
- Fill in the input field for "Select Value". Use the Recommended Values ​​to select the appropriate inductor and/or transformer from your supplier.
- All relevant information is displayed under “Calculated Values†below the switch mode power supply schematic. For example, duty cycle, input power, diode loss, current ripple, and so on. The information displayed depends on the topology chosen. Use the shortcut keys CTRL+1, CTRL+2, CTRL+3 to toggle between minimum, average, and maximum input voltages. The average input voltage is the sum of the minimum and maximum input voltage values ​​divided by two.
- The yellow highlight on the schematic can be clicked. Once clicked, a new window will appear showing the voltage and current of the selected device. More information will appear below the graph. The input voltage can also be changed by the button displayed in the lower right corner.
- Click on the "Info" button to open a new window and display more information about the topology shown, such as a link to the application manual and data sheet.
