Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) announces the introduction of Power by Linear®'s LTC3351, a device and backup power controller IC that includes hot-swap front-end protection and all the necessary features to provide a complete, stand-alone, based Backup of the capacitor. The LTC3351's integrated hot-swap controller and circuit breakers feature an N-channel MOSFET that provides a low-loss path from input to output and is reduced by foldback current limiting. The device provides a reliable short-term uninterruptible power supply in the event of a mains failure, suitable for solid-state drive (SSD) and non-volatile dual in-line memory modules (NVDIMM) data backup, power supplies for medical and industrial applications Fault alarms, as well as applications such as “dying gasp†power failure indicators. The LTC3351 provides PowerPathTM control, capacitor stack charging and balancing, protection, and capacitor health monitoring. Other applications include high current 12V traversing power supplies and short-term uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for servers, mass and high availability systems. The LTC3351 has an input voltage range of 4.5V to 35V and a charge/backup current capability of over 10A. The device also provides balanced and overvoltage protection for a series stack of 1 to 4 supercapacitors. The LTC3351's synchronous buck controller charges the capacitor stack at a constant current/constant voltage of up to 5V per capacitor. In the backup mode, the buck converter operates as a synchronous boost DC/DC in reverse, delivering power from the supercapacitor stack to the backup power system. The hot-swap controller provides programmable UV/OV thresholds, PCIe-compatible startup timing, and precision threshold/retry inputs. The LTC3351 includes a precision 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) that continuously monitors the input and output voltages and currents. In addition, the internal measurement system monitors backup capacitor related parameters, including capacitors, capacitors, and stack ESR (equivalent series resistance) to ensure adequate energy storage and power during backup mode. By monitoring the actual capacitance of the backup supercapacitor, the LTC3351 allows the system to set the capacitor voltage to a minimum while ensuring the required backup energy, thereby extending the life of the capacitor. All system parameters and fault conditions can be monitored via a 2-wire I2C interface, and alarm levels can be set to alert the system of sudden changes in these measured parameters. The LTC3351 is available in a thermally enhanced 44-pin, low profile (0.75mm high) 4mm x 7mm QFN package. The device's operating junction temperature range is –40°C to 125°C and is available from stock.
