HDR (High-Dynamic Range) has become the latest battlefield in the ever-ending battle of audio-video standards.

Many battle princes on this battlefield:

HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma log gamma distribution, developed by the BBC and NHK)

Advanced HDR (developed by Technicolor Special Arts, France)

HDR10 (developed jointly by Samsung, Sony, and LG)

Dolby Vision (Dolby Vision, developed by Dolby)

Considering that HLG and Advanced HDR have not yet achieved significant advantages in the market, we have temporarily focused on HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

There are already many theoretical introductions on the Internet, but what exactly do they actually perform? In order to find out, we put the HDR10 and Dolby Vision influential princes on the battlefield.

HDR10 has the highest actual use in these four technical standards. Although Dolby Vision has a smaller number of applications, it is theoretically more advanced and has better picture quality.

[difference]

Dolby Vision technology is more advanced because it incorporates dynamic metadata in each frame of the display. When a TV monitor supporting Dolby Vision receives signals from a playback device, in addition to information such as brightness, contrast, and color, these dynamic metadata are also received at the same time, and these data are combined to ensure that each frame can be displayed. Restore as much as possible.

Another difference from the HDR10 is that video content that supports Dolby Vision technology has been optimized directly for TVs that also support Dolby Vision technology, and thus theoretically it will provide the best picture quality.

Previously, the content introduced by Dolby Vision only existed literally and there were a few manufacturers' demos. Now, we finally have the opportunity to directly compare the actual display effect of Dolby Vision and HDR10 in our AV room.

(Note: There is currently a technical standard, HDR10+, which also loads dynamic metadata, which we will introduce later)

[Comparative]

We use an LG OLED65G6P-C and two OPPO UDP-203 Blu-ray players. One UPD-203 outputs the HDR10 signal, and the other outputs the Dolby Vision signal after firmware upgrade.

On the software side, we bought the 4K Blu-ray discs of two movies, "Power Rangers Extravaganza" and "Despicable Me 3 Despicable Me 3," with two films for each movie. Although these two movies are not outstanding, there are only a few Blu-ray movies on the market that support Dolby Vision (in addition to the two movies, there are Quick 8 and 5).

The two UDP-203s are connected to the LG TV at the same time and play the Blu-ray disc of the same movie at the same time. The two input signals are switched on the TV to compare the actual display effect.

The image mode on the TV is selected as the default mode of the Cinema Home Home Theater. When the TV detects the Dolby Vision source, it will automatically switch to this mode, but when playing HDR10 format, you must manually select this mode.

Of course, this kind of comparison is not perfect. Although the two OPPO players have the same model, we cannot guarantee that their electrical parameters are “identical”. In addition, after upgrading to the latest firmware in order to support Dolby Vision, the new firmware may also affect the image quality.

Despicable Me Despicable Me 3

First publish the viewing experience directly: Dolby Vision's "Degenerate 3" is worse than the HDR10 version!

HDR10's picture quality is bright and transparent, the picture is very clean, the edges of the characters and objects are clear, and the layers are clear. The picture has a more realistic 3D feeling and is very lively. This effect is very appealing and makes the whole movie more attractive. people.

In contrast, the Dolby Vision version is bleak, and characters and objects lack a sense of three-dimensionality and embossing. The contrast between the light and dark parts of the picture is not clear enough, and the contrast between the light and shade of the compressed painting makes the problem of “edge dissolve” in different colors and shaded parts. In short, the overall picture performance is far less than our expectations.

One thing to emphasize: we use the factory default Cinema Home parameter settings because we believe that most consumers will not make any additional adjustments (after all, the core purpose of Dolby Vision is to allow consumers to see the most accurate picture ). In fact, we spent a lot of time setting up the picture in order to make the picture quality in the Dolby Vision mode better, but it did not make any difference.

Moreover, when the LG TV received the signals of these two technical standards, the screen setting options were completely different, which also caused us a lot of trouble. After all, we hope to make this comparison as convincing as possible.

Through a variety of attempts, the factory default settings under the two technical standards can indeed be said to be the best settings, but the HDR10's picture quality is clearly better for the Depression 3 Blu-ray Disc.

[Power Rangers Extraordinary Team]

This part of the movie is really garbage! However, many of them are very descriptive movie clips, and the DV and HDR10 formats are very good.

When playing HDR10 version, the screen is clear and clean with rich colors. A few children are stupid and lack ordinary children's uniforms and colors. They are very vivid. The details of the light and dark parts of the screen are very good. Compared with the normal dynamic range, HDR high dynamics left us with a very deep impression.

But in DV mode, the picture looks even better! Under the dark horizon, the car headlights are bright, the details in the distant land and sky are more abundant, the twinkling stars in the night sky look clearer, and the silly players in the body are more glamorous.

In short, the image quality improvement is comprehensive: Although it is a slight improvement in all aspects, the overall improvement in the effect is quite obvious.

[which is better]

Of course, it is too early to draw conclusions. After all, for the survey sample, the two films are still far from enough. However, we now know that Dolby Vision's image quality is better than the already outstanding HDR10 with proper modulation of the code.

Compared to the HDR10 version of the "Extraordinary Team", the DV version of the screen is more three-dimensional, the picture is more vivid, the details of the light and dark areas are better. Although this gap is not huge, but the perception is indeed better.

Dobly Vision encodes and modifies each frame of the movie. If the technology is not properly handled, it will be counterproductive. The "Vicious 3" is an example. The "Extraordinary Team" fully met our expectations for Dolby Vision.
